Liposuction is a cosmetic fat removal procedure. Liposuction helps get rid of fat deposits that don’t respond to diet and exercise.
Liposuction is a surgical body-contouring procedure designed to remove localized fat deposits and improve the shape and proportions of specific areas of the body.
It is commonly chosen by patients who are close to their desired weight but still have stubborn areas of fat that do not respond well to diet and exercise.
Liposuction is not intended as a weight-loss procedure. Its main purpose is to refine body contours by selectively removing subcutaneous fat from targeted areas.
Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure that removes unwanted fat deposits from your body. If you’ve tried diet and exercise, but the fat won’t budge, liposuction can help. The procedure gives you a smoother body shape. Liposuction surgery isn’t a weight-loss procedure.
What is liposuction?
Liposuction removes unwanted fat through small incisions using a thin surgical tube called a cannula.
During the procedure, the surgeon carefully removes fat from selected areas while shaping the surrounding tissues to create smoother and more balanced contours.
The amount of fat that can be removed and the technique used depend on the treatment area, body proportions, skin quality, and the patient’s individual anatomy.
Good skin elasticity is particularly important because the skin needs to adapt to the new contour after fat has been removed.
Where on my body can I get liposuction?
Liposuction can be performed on many different areas of the face and body.
Common treatment areas include the abdomen, waist, flanks, back, upper arms, thighs, hips, knees, chest, double chin, and neck.
Several connected areas may also be treated together when the goal is to create a more balanced overall contour.
The abdomen and waist are among the most common areas treated with liposuction.
Fat can be removed from the upper and lower abdomen as well as the waist and flanks to create a slimmer and more defined body contour.
For patients with good skin elasticity, liposuction alone may provide significant improvement. However, if there is substantial loose skin or weakened abdominal muscles, a tummy tuck may be more appropriate.
Liposuction can be used to reduce localized fat deposits on the upper and lower back, bra-line area, sides of the torso, and chest.
Treating these areas together with the waist can help create smoother transitions between different parts of the upper body.
The exact treatment area and amount of fat removal should be planned according to the patient’s natural body proportions rather than simply removing the maximum possible amount of fat.
Liposuction can also be performed on smaller areas such as beneath the chin and along the upper neck.
For suitable patients, removing localized fat in this area can improve the definition between the jawline and neck and create a cleaner lower-face contour.
However, fullness under the chin may also be related to loose skin, muscle laxity, or facial structure. In these cases, liposuction may need to be combined with another procedure or replaced by a different treatment.
Liposuction Surgery & Recovery
The procedure may be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia depending on the number and size of the areas being treated.
Small incisions are made in discreet locations, and a thin cannula is used to remove excess fat and contour the treatment area.
After surgery, swelling, bruising, soreness, and temporary changes in sensation are normal. Patients undergoing body liposuction are usually advised to wear a compression garment during the initial recovery period.
Light walking is generally encouraged, while strenuous exercise and heavy physical activity should be avoided until approved by the surgeon.
Liposuction Results
Some improvement in body shape can be visible soon after surgery, although swelling initially hides the final contour.
As swelling gradually decreases, the treated areas usually become slimmer and more defined. The tissues continue to settle over the following weeks and months.
The fat cells removed during liposuction are permanently removed from the treated area. However, remaining fat cells can still increase in size with weight gain, so maintaining a relatively stable weight is important for preserving the result.
Is Liposuction Right for Me?
The best candidates for liposuction are generally healthy adults with localized areas of excess fat, relatively stable body weight, and realistic expectations about what surgery can achieve.
Skin quality is also important. Liposuction removes fat but does not remove significant amounts of loose skin.
A consultation with a plastic surgeon is therefore necessary to determine whether liposuction alone is appropriate or whether another body-contouring procedure would provide a better result.
