Understanding the Procedure

What Is a Lip Lift?

The area between the base of the nose and the upper lip is known as the philtrum. Its length and proportions have a significant influence on the appearance of the mouth and lower face.

Some people naturally have a relatively long philtrum, while in others the distance gradually increases with age as the upper lip becomes longer and turns inward.

During a lip lift, a carefully measured strip of skin is removed from directly beneath the nose. The upper lip is then gently elevated and secured in its new position. This can reveal more of the natural pink lip without significantly increasing its actual volume.

A structural change, not added volume

Unlike injectable fillers, a lip lift changes the position of the upper lip itself, creating a long-lasting improvement in facial proportion.

What Can a Lip Lift Improve?

A lip lift may be considered when the relationship between the nose, upper lip and surrounding facial features is not ideally balanced.

01

Long Philtrum

Shortening the distance between the nose and upper lip can create a more compact and youthful lower-face proportion.

02

Thin-Looking Upper Lip

Gently rotating the lip outward can reveal more of the natural pink lip without excessive added volume.

03

Limited Tooth Show

In selected patients, elevation of the upper lip may improve upper-tooth visibility when the lips are relaxed or smiling.

04

Age-Related Lengthening

A lip lift can help restore a shorter, more youthful relationship between the nose and upper lip.

05

Lip Definition

Improved positioning can make the Cupid's bow and natural upper-lip contour more visible.

Surgical Technique

How Is Lip Lift Surgery Performed?

One of the most commonly used techniques is the subnasal or bullhorn lip lift.

The incision is carefully designed along the natural contours immediately beneath the nose, usually following the curves around the nostrils and the base of the columella.

A precisely calculated amount of skin is removed. The surgeon then elevates the upper lip and carefully closes the incision so that the resulting scar lies within the natural shadows and contours beneath the nose.

Precision matters

Removing too little skin may create minimal change, while excessive shortening can disturb facial proportions or increase tooth and gum exposure. The amount of lift should always be individually planned.

Designing a Natural Lip Lift

A successful lip lift is about proportion—not simply making the distance beneath the nose as short as possible.

The surgeon evaluates the lips together with the nose, teeth, chin and overall facial structure to determine how much elevation will create the most natural result.

Understanding Your Options

Lip Lift vs. Lip Fillers

Both can enhance the lips, but they address different anatomical concerns.

Structural Change

Lip Lift

A lip lift changes the position of the upper lip and shortens the distance beneath the nose. It can reveal more natural pink lip without relying on additional volume.

Because tissue is surgically repositioned, the result is considered long-lasting.

Added Volume

Lip Fillers

Fillers primarily add volume and can improve projection, symmetry, contour and fullness. However, they do not significantly shorten a long philtrum.

In patients with a long upper lip, repeatedly adding filler may increase projection without correcting the underlying proportion.

They are not always alternatives

In selected cases, a small amount of filler can still be used after complete healing from a lip lift when additional volume or contour refinement is desired.

Is It Right for You?

Who May Be a Good Candidate?

Lip lift surgery is most appropriate when the main concern is the position and proportion of the upper lip rather than simply a lack of lip volume.

Relatively long distance between the nose and upper lip
Desire for more visible upper lip without excessive filler
An upper lip that naturally turns inward
Age-related lengthening of the upper lip
Preference for a long-lasting structural change
Realistic expectations about the result and scar
Important

Not Every Patient Needs a Lip Lift

Patients who already have a short philtrum or significant upper-tooth and gum exposure may not benefit from further shortening.

The face should be evaluated both at rest and while smiling before surgery is recommended.

✦
An Important Consideration

Will There Be a Scar?

Yes. A lip lift is a surgical procedure and therefore creates a permanent scar. The incision is normally positioned immediately beneath the nose, where it can be concealed within the natural curves and shadows of the nasal base.

Initially, the scar may appear pink, firm or more noticeable. It generally becomes softer and less visible as healing progresses. Scar quality varies between individuals and depends on skin characteristics, genetics, wound tension, sun exposure, surgical technique and postoperative care.

Patients should understand the location and expected evolution of the scar before choosing surgery.

Healing Process

Recovery After a Lip Lift

Swelling is expected after surgery and is usually most noticeable around the upper lip and base of the nose during the first several days.

Mild bruising, tightness, temporary asymmetry and changes in sensation may also occur during early healing.

Early Days Swelling and tightness are usually most noticeable.
Sutures Removed according to the surgeon's postoperative schedule.
Following Weeks The lip gradually relaxes and settles into a more natural position.
Following Months The incision continues to soften and the scar gradually matures.
Long-Term Outcome

When Will I See the Final Result?

The change in philtrum length and upper-lip position is visible immediately after surgery, but early swelling temporarily distorts the appearance.

A more natural lip shape develops progressively as swelling decreases. The tissues continue to soften and settle over the following weeks and months while the scar gradually matures.

Final results should therefore be evaluated only after adequate healing has occurred.

Longevity

How Long Does It Last?

A lip lift creates a structural change by surgically repositioning the upper lip, so the result is considered long-lasting.

The removed skin does not grow back. However, surgery cannot stop natural aging, and the lips and surrounding facial tissues will continue to change gradually over time.

Comprehensive Facial Planning

Can It Be Combined With Other Procedures?

Yes. Depending on facial anatomy and aesthetic goals, a lip lift may be performed alone or incorporated into a broader facial rejuvenation or facial-balancing plan.

Rhinoplasty Facelift Neck Lift Facial Fat Grafting Chin Surgery Blepharoplasty Skin Rejuvenation Conservative Lip Filler

Combining procedures should be based on facial proportions and medical suitability rather than simply performing as many treatments as possible.

Personalized Surgical Planning

Lip Lift Surgery in Korea

Korean plastic surgery places strong emphasis on detailed facial analysis and balanced proportions. For lip lift surgery, this is particularly important because even a small change in the distance between the nose and upper lip can noticeably influence the appearance of the entire face.

The surgical plan may take into account the shape of the nose, philtrum length, tooth exposure, lip thickness, Cupid's bow, chin position and overall facial structure.

For international patients, Luxe Beauty Health can help arrange consultations with experienced plastic surgeons in Korea and obtain an individualized recommendation based on your photographs and aesthetic goals.
