Upper Facial Rejuvenation

What Is a Forehead Lift?

A forehead lift is a surgical procedure that repositions the soft tissues of the forehead and upper facial area.

As these tissues descend with age, the eyebrows may move downward, the upper eyelids can appear heavier, and forehead creases may become increasingly noticeable.

Rather than treating each visible line individually, forehead lift surgery addresses the underlying position of the tissues.

The objective is not to create a completely motionless or unnaturally tight forehead. A well-planned procedure should preserve facial character while improving age-related descent and heaviness.

Common Concerns

What Can a Forehead Lift Improve?

Descended or low eyebrows
Heavy upper eye area
Horizontal forehead lines
Deep forehead creases
Frown lines between the brows
Forehead tissue laxity
Drooping outer brows
Brow asymmetry
Tired or stern expression
Upper facial aging
The forehead, eyebrows and upper eyelids are anatomically connected. What appears to be excess upper eyelid skin may sometimes be partly caused by downward movement of the forehead and eyebrows.
Understanding Upper Facial Aging

Why Does the Forehead Age?

Forehead aging is not caused by a single factor. Skin, muscles, soft tissues and facial volume all change gradually over time.

01

Skin Changes

Collagen and elastin decrease with age, making the skin thinner and less elastic. Sun exposure can accelerate these changes.

02

Muscle Movement

Repeated expressions contribute to horizontal forehead lines and vertical creases between the eyebrows.

03

Tissue Descent

Forehead tissues gradually move downward, which can lower the eyebrows and increase heaviness around the upper eyelids.

04

Volume Changes

Changes in fat, bone and soft-tissue support can alter the contour of the temples, forehead and surrounding areas.

Surgical Approaches

Types of Forehead Lift Surgery

The surgical approach is selected according to forehead anatomy, hairline position, degree of tissue descent and the desired result.

01

Endoscopic Forehead Lift

Uses several small incisions within the hair-bearing scalp to release and reposition forehead and brow tissues.

02

Hairline Forehead Lift

Places the incision along the front of the hairline, providing greater control over forehead height and tissue repositioning.

03

Temporal / Lateral Lift

Focuses more strongly on the outer brow and temporal region when aging is concentrated in the lateral upper face.

Modern Forehead Rejuvenation

Endoscopic Forehead Lift

The endoscopic forehead lift is one of the most commonly used modern techniques for upper facial rejuvenation.

Several small incisions are made within the hair-bearing scalp. Through these openings, the surgeon uses specialized instruments and an endoscopic camera to access, release and reposition the forehead tissues.

Because the incisions are relatively small and hidden within the hair, the technique avoids a long incision across the scalp.

Elevate descended forehead tissues
Improve brow position
Reduce upper eye heaviness
Soften forehead creases
Improve frown-line appearance
Elevate the lateral brow
The goal is controlled repositioning — not excessive elevation of the eyebrows.
An Important Part of Surgical Planning

Forehead Lift & Hairline Position

The relationship between the forehead and hairline is an important part of facial proportion and can directly influence which surgical technique is most appropriate.

Average or Lower Hairline

Incisions Hidden Within the Hair

A patient with a relatively low or average hairline may be well suited for an approach in which the incisions are positioned within the hair-bearing scalp.

Higher Forehead

Hairline / Pretrichial Approach

Patients with a naturally high forehead may require a different strategy. In selected cases, a hairline approach can reposition forehead tissues while also helping reduce the apparent height of the forehead.

Before surgery, the surgeon evaluates forehead height, hairline shape, hair density, hairline stability, eyebrow position and the distance between the eyebrows and hairline. The technique should be selected according to the entire upper facial structure — not forehead wrinkles alone.
Related — But Not Identical

Forehead Lift vs. Brow Lift

Forehead lift and brow lift are closely related procedures, but the area and extent of correction can be different.

MORE LOCALIZED

Brow Lift

A brow lift primarily focuses on improving the position and shape of the eyebrows and reducing heaviness immediately above the eyes.

Localized techniques such as a sub-brow or temporal brow lift may address a relatively specific area without requiring broader forehead correction.

BROADER UPPER-FACE CORRECTION

Forehead Lift

A forehead lift generally addresses a larger area of the upper face.

It can reposition forehead tissues, improve brow descent, soften forehead creases and address age-related changes around the glabella and upper eye area.

Different Problems — Different Solutions

Forehead Lift vs. Botox

Botox and forehead lift surgery can both improve the forehead, but they work in fundamentally different ways.

Difference between treatment of dynamic forehead wrinkles and forehead tissue lifting
Muscle Activity

Botulinum Toxin

Botulinum toxin temporarily reduces the activity of selected facial muscles and is particularly effective for dynamic wrinkles.

  • Horizontal expression lines
  • Frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Wrinkles caused primarily by muscle movement
  • Temporary, non-surgical treatment
Structural Aging

Forehead Lift Surgery

Surgery addresses the physical position of the forehead and brow tissues rather than simply reducing muscle activity.

  • Descended forehead tissues
  • Low or drooping eyebrows
  • Significant upper eye heaviness
  • Skin and soft-tissue laxity
Botox cannot physically reposition significantly descended tissues. However, surgical and non-surgical treatments are not always alternatives — in selected patients they may complement each other as part of a long-term rejuvenation plan.
Personalized Surgical Planning

Which Forehead Lift Is Right for You?

The appropriate technique depends on much more than the number or depth of forehead wrinkles.

Two patients with apparently similar forehead aging may receive very different recommendations because their hairline, brow position, skin laxity and facial proportions are different.

Forehead height
Hairline position
Hair density
Brow position
Degree of brow ptosis
Skin laxity
Upper eyelid condition
Muscle activity
Facial asymmetry
Previous treatments
Facial proportions
Desired degree of change
Balanced Upper-Face Rejuvenation

What Can Change After a Forehead Lift?

The objective is balanced rejuvenation rather than simply creating a tighter forehead.

Smoother Forehead Improvement in the appearance of deep forehead creases.
Improved Brow Position Repositioning of brows affected by upper facial descent.
More Open Eyes Less heaviness around the upper eye area.
Softer Frown Lines Improvement of age-related changes around the glabella.
Better Proportions Improved relationship between forehead, brows and eyes.
Fresher Expression A less tired, tense or stern upper facial appearance.
Natural Movement The goal is rejuvenation without a frozen appearance.
Long-Term Improvement Structural repositioning rather than temporary wrinkle reduction.
Comprehensive Facial Rejuvenation

Can a Forehead Lift Be Combined With Other Procedures?

Yes. Forehead lift surgery is frequently combined with other procedures when aging affects several facial areas.

01

Upper Blepharoplasty

Corrects true excess upper eyelid tissue when additional eyelid correction is needed after evaluating brow position.

02

Sub-Brow Lift

May provide additional localized correction beneath the eyebrow in selected patients.

03

Lower Blepharoplasty

Addresses under-eye bags, excess skin and age-related lower eyelid changes.

04

Face & Neck Lift

Allows broader rejuvenation when aging involves the upper, middle and lower face.

05

Facial Fat Grafting

Restores age-related volume loss in areas such as the temples, forehead and cheeks.

06

Skin Treatments

Laser, regenerative and skin treatments may improve texture, pigmentation and overall skin quality.

After Surgery

Recovery After Forehead Lift Surgery

Recovery varies according to the surgical technique and whether other facial procedures are performed at the same time.

Early Recovery

Swelling and bruising are common. Some swelling can extend around the eyebrows and upper eyelids even when incisions are located within the hairline.

First 1–2 Weeks

Most patients notice substantial improvement during this period, although residual swelling and tightness can remain longer.

Temporary Sensations

Tightness, numbness or altered scalp sensation may occur during healing and generally improves gradually.

Gradual Settling

The forehead and brow position continue to settle as swelling decreases and the tissues adapt to their new position.

During early recovery, patients are generally advised to sleep with the head elevated, avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting, follow incision and hair-washing instructions, attend postoperative appointments, and protect healing incisions from excessive sun exposure.
Incision Placement

Incisions & Scars

Incision placement varies according to the surgical technique and the patient's hairline.

Endoscopic Lift

Several relatively small incisions are generally positioned within the hair-bearing scalp.

Hairline Lift

The incision follows the front of the hairline, providing direct access and greater control over forehead height.

Temporal Approach

Incisions may be positioned within or near the temporal hairline depending on the surgical plan.

Every surgical incision creates a scar. Hair density, skin characteristics, surgical technique, incision tension and postoperative scar care can all influence its final appearance.

Long-Term Rejuvenation

How Long Do Forehead Lift Results Last?

Forehead lift surgery can provide long-lasting improvement because it physically repositions the tissues of the upper face.

However, no facial surgery permanently stops aging. Skin elasticity, gravity, facial movement, lifestyle and sun exposure continue to influence the face throughout life.

Even as aging continues, the forehead and brow area may remain in a more youthful position than they would have had without surgery.

Advanced Facial Plastic Surgery

Forehead Lift Surgery in Korea

Upper facial surgery requires careful attention to the relationship between the forehead, hairline, eyebrows, eyelids and overall facial proportions.

A technically successful forehead lift should not simply pull the forehead upward. The direction and degree of tissue repositioning must be carefully planned to avoid an unnatural eyebrow shape or excessive elevation.

Plastic surgeons in Korea may use different techniques according to individual anatomy, including endoscopic forehead lifting, hairline approaches, temporal lifting and combinations with eyelid or facial rejuvenation procedures.

The appropriate surgical plan should be based on the patient's anatomy rather than a standardized procedure.

Initial Assessment

Your Forehead Lift Consultation

Every patient's forehead and upper facial anatomy is different. Clear photographs help surgeons evaluate the forehead, hairline, eyebrows and upper eyelids before your trip to Korea.

For an initial evaluation, please provide:

Front facial photo
Right & left 45° photos
Right & left profile photos
Full forehead & hairline photo
Forehead completely relaxed
Photos without filters
Previous treatments are important.

Please tell us about previous upper eyelid surgery, brow or forehead surgery, thread lifting, Botox, fillers, fat grafting, hair transplantation, hairline surgery or other facial procedures.

When taking your photographs, avoid intentionally raising your eyebrows. Raising them can temporarily hide the true degree of brow and forehead descent.
