What Is a Brow Lift?
A brow lift improves the position and shape of the eyebrows and the tissues directly above the eyes.
With aging, the eyebrows — particularly the outer portion — can gradually descend. This may create excess tissue over the upper eyelids and make the eyes appear smaller, heavier, tired, or sad.
Instead of simply removing eyelid skin, a brow lift addresses the position of the tissues above the eyelid. Depending on your anatomy, surgery may lift the entire eyebrow, concentrate on the outer brow, or remove excess tissue directly beneath the eyebrow.
The goal is not an unnaturally high or surprised-looking brow. Modern brow lift surgery focuses on restoring a balanced eyebrow position that fits your facial proportions.
What Can a Brow Lift Improve?
Types of Brow Lift Surgery
There is no single brow lift technique that is ideal for everyone. The correct approach depends on brow position, skin laxity, forehead anatomy, hairline, previous surgery, and the degree of correction required.
Sub-Brow Lift
A sub-brow lift removes a carefully planned strip of excess skin directly beneath the eyebrow. The incision follows the lower border of the brow, helping reduce heaviness between the eyebrow and upper eyelid while preserving the natural eyelid shape.
Temporal Brow Lift
A temporal or lateral brow lift focuses mainly on the outer portion of the eyebrow. It can improve lateral brow descent and heaviness around the outer corner of the eye without requiring significant correction of the central forehead.
Endoscopic Brow Lift
An endoscopic brow lift uses small incisions hidden within the hair-bearing scalp. Through these incisions, the surgeon releases and repositions the forehead and brow tissues to provide broader elevation of the upper face.
When Is a Sub-Brow Lift Considered?
A sub-brow lift can be particularly useful when there is significant excess tissue between the eyebrow and upper eyelid, but preserving the patient's natural eyelid shape is important.
Rather than changing the eyelid crease itself, the surgeon works from directly beneath the eyebrow.
Sub-Brow Lift vs. Upper Blepharoplasty
These procedures may improve similar concerns, but they work in different anatomical areas.
Sub-Brow Lift
Removes excess skin from directly beneath the eyebrow and improves heaviness coming from above the upper eyelid.
It can be particularly useful when the eyebrow-to-eye area has become heavy while the natural eyelid shape should be preserved.
Upper Blepharoplasty
Removes or repositions excess tissue directly from the upper eyelid.
Patients with a good eyebrow position but true excess eyelid skin may benefit more from upper blepharoplasty. In some cases, both procedures may be recommended.
Which Brow Lift Is Right for You?
Choosing the correct technique requires more than looking at the amount of visible skin. The surgeon evaluates the relationship between the forehead, eyebrows, eyelids, and overall facial proportions.
A localized technique may be sufficient for mild changes. More advanced aging involving the forehead, eyebrows, and upper eye area may require a broader approach.
What Can Change After a Brow Lift?
A successful brow lift should make the upper face appear fresher and more open without creating an obviously operated appearance.
Can Brow Lift Be Combined With Other Procedures?
Yes. Brow lift surgery is frequently performed as part of a broader facial rejuvenation plan when several areas show age-related changes.
Combining procedures can allow the surgeon to address several components of facial aging while maintaining balance between the forehead, eyes, cheeks, jawline, and neck.
Recovery After Brow Lift Surgery
Recovery varies depending on the surgical technique and whether additional procedures are performed at the same time.
Swelling and bruising are expected during the early recovery period. Most patients notice significant improvement during the first one to two weeks, although some residual swelling may remain longer.
What About Brow Lift Scars?
Every surgical procedure creates a scar, but incision placement is carefully selected according to the technique used.
The incision is positioned immediately beneath the eyebrow and follows its natural lower border.
Incisions are generally positioned near or within the temporal hairline, depending on the technique.
Several small incisions are typically hidden within the hair-bearing scalp.
Scar maturation takes time. Skin type, individual healing characteristics, surgical technique, and postoperative care can all influence the final appearance of the scar.
How Long Do Brow Lift Results Last?
A surgical brow lift can provide long-lasting improvement, but it does not stop the natural aging process.
The tissues continue to change gradually over time due to aging, gravity, skin elasticity, lifestyle, and individual anatomy.
Even as aging continues, patients may maintain a more youthful brow position than they would have had without surgery. Longevity also depends on the technique used and the degree of correction performed.
Brow Lift Surgery in Korea
South Korea is internationally recognized for facial plastic surgery and procedures involving the delicate anatomy around the eyes and upper face.
Korean plastic surgeons commonly evaluate the relationship between the eyebrows, eyelids, forehead, and overall facial proportions rather than treating a single feature in isolation.
This is particularly important for brow surgery because similar-looking concerns may have very different causes. One patient may need upper eyelid surgery, another may benefit from a sub-brow lift, while another may require broader elevation of the eyebrow and forehead tissues.
Selecting the correct procedure is an essential part of achieving a balanced, natural-looking result.
